Subaru Rally Heritage
Rallying is one of the most highly demanding forms of motorsport in the world, taking place over some of the most varied racing conditions imaginable while pushing vehicle and driver to the limit. Regardless of weather or course conditions rally drivers strive to post the fastest time possible by placing their trust in their skills, their co-driver, their team and their car.
The team-oriented, daunting and ever-changing nature of rallying is the perfect arena for Subaru to develop and refine its core technologies in the pursuit of one goal: to prove the superiority of the Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive system. The lessons learned through Subaru's extensive rally heritage are evident in our full line-up of vehicles, including our rally-inspired, award-winning Impreza WRX and Impreza WRX STI.
Subaru first became involved in rallying in 1980 when entries originated directly from the factory in Japan. The manufacturer earned class wins on a number of international rallies, including the Safari Rally, in a variety of models such as Leones, Swingbacks and Touring Wagons. In 1989, it became a serious World Championship player when it formed a partnership with British motorsport company Prodrive to establish the Subaru World Rally Team. Subaru rocketed to success and became World Champion Manufacturer just five years later. The team went on to win further five FIA titles and, thanks to the popularity of its cars and drivers, enjoys cult status among fans the world over.
